This automata tinkering workshop is an online course held over zoom for artists, makers and educators. Together we’ll take a deep dive into the world of automata – playful, humorous kinetic sculptures. It will take place in six, 2-hour sessions on Wednesdays from 16th Sept – 21st October. 4-6 pm in UK // 8-10am PST // 5-7pm in Europe

This workshop is suitable for all abilities as long as you are prepared to develop your own creative ideas and experiment with us. It is perfect for you if:

  • You want to find out more about automata, who makes them and how they are built

  • You are an educator who wants to inspire adults and children with tinkering or STEAM activities

  • You are a practicing artist who wants to experiment with building kinetic sculptures

  • You work on personal projects in your spare time and want to add a new medium for expression

  • You are interested in engaging with a group of practitioners in different fields

Kit components, prototype materials and a copy of the essential guide to automata making, Cabaret Mechanical Movement, will be mailed to you before the workshops commences. In the course we will engage with automata artists, examine Cabaret Mechanical Theatre creations and get the chance to build our own kinetic sculptures. By the end of the workshop, students will have worked with a variety of mediums, learned about some of the practical elements and built several automata prototypes.

Over the past few years, we’ve had the chance to lead automata PD workshops for museum staff in New Mexico, Arkansas, UK and Germany, try out some wild explorations and collaborate with friends at CMT. This workshop will be a great chance for us to share some of our favorite activities and prototypes as well as some new content like an inspiring interview with automata master Paul Spooner earlier this summer where he shared some wonderful insights about his process of making and tinkering.

Space is limited so sign up today to reserve your space in the workshop. More details are on the eventbrite page where you can register for the session.
