WICO at Maker Faire Week of Learning 2018

This week, Wonderful Idea Co will be preparing for a series of pop-up events around the Bay Area connected to the Maker Faire Week of Learning. These workshops will be a chance to continue experiments with new activities and collaborate with some of our favorite partners-in-tinkering.

On Thursday night, we’ll join friends from Curious Jane, NOMAD Middle School Gone Mobile and Tinkering School for family-friendly maker block party at Brightworks School in the mission. We’ll be working with these other three organizations in different ways for our summer camp this year and this event will give us the chance to collaborate on a super fun evening of making and tinkering. Some of the activities will include a collaborative painting project, strawbees creations, tinkering challenges, art machines and screen printing.

On Friday we’ll be co-presenting a workshop with Jie Qi of Chibitronics and David Cole and Lis Sylvan of Nexmap on paper circuit storytelling and data mapping. This session will give us a chance to test out some of the starting points and introductory templates that we’ve been developing with NexMap. We’re excited to continue to explore this version of tinkering with computation with engaged educators.

Register for the workshop here (the fee includes a chibichip and entrance to the faire on friday!)

And of course we have a booth at the faire over the weekend. On Saturday and Sunday the WICO booth will be humming with hands on tinkering activities faciliated by a crack team of educators. We plan to set up a collaborative programmed paper circuit installation that participants can contribute to over the course of the faire. After a few different experiements using these tools and materials it will be fun to try a different flavor of the activity for a drop-in workshop.

As always we’re looking forward to exploring the rest of Maker Faire as well. There will be an emphasis on female makers, presentations by some of our mentors/idols and I’m sure unexpected surprises around every corner.

We're looking forward to reconnect with old friends and discover new people and projects over this jam-packed week of making, tinkering and learning.
